BikeShare celebrates repair shop launch with a film screening
About BikeShare
BikeShare is a partnership between The Sierra Club of Canada – Atlantic Chapter and MUN’s Project Green. BikeShare has been active since 2007 and is presently funded by a generous grant from the Moving On Sustainable Transportation (M.O.S.T.) program through Transport Canada. Our goals are to encourage cycling as a healthy, accessible and sustainable mode of transportation within the city of St. John’s and to empower cyclists, both veterans and beginners, with mechanical and safety education through our workshops and Repair Shop.

BikeShare is inviting everyone to the launch of their community Repair Shop and the local premiere of the movie Veer. Veer explores America’s fast-growing bicycling culture by profiling five people whose lives are inextricably tied to bicycling and the bike-centric social groups they belong to. The film follows these characters over the course of a year, offering a behind-the-scenes look at their personal struggles and triumphs. Veer examines what it means to be part of a community, and how social movements are formed. (www.veerthemovie.com)

Cycling4Women.ca - A New Site for Women Cyclists Launched
Thursday, August 27, (Paris, ON) - Bicycle Canada, publishers of Canada's premier online cycling magazine CanadianCyclist.com, are pleased to announce the launch of Cycling 4 Women, an online magazine geared to Canadian women cycling enthusiasts.

Cycling4Women.ca will provide women's cycling news, resources, interviews, product reviews and more, explains Canadian Cyclist Editor Rob Jones.

"Canadian Cyclist has always provided in-depth coverage of women's cycling in Canada, but it sometimes gets buried among the thousands of items we publish every year. Cycling4Women.ca allows us to separate out the women's-specific coverage we produce for readers interested primarily in that area, and to increase the amount of coverage we provide. In addition to news, Cycling4Women.ca will offer product reviews, feature and interviews and discussion venues; a community for cycling women."

Leigh Hargrove, a former competitive road racer (1995 National Junior Champion, National team member 1995-1997) and the founder of a 2004 online cycling 'zine, Pushbikes.ca, has joined Canadian Cyclist in the role of Women's Editor. Hargrove has already posted feature articles - beginning with the Velodonnas women's program in Winnipeg - as well as starting a Facebook fanpage.

"We all know that cycling changes lives and does so in such a powerful and magical way - and we want to see more women become involved in the sport who then stay involved," explains Hargrove.

"Often women cyclists may get intimidated or discouraged by the technical side of the sport or the lack of other women to ride and race with - we hope to help change that by being the hub for information that unites women across the country in promoting the sport to women."

"This means making it easier to access resources, tools, clubs, information and the stories and people that will inspire them to learn more about our sport and become better cyclists."

Hargrove wants to hear more about the programs and people that are promoting the sport for women all across the country. Please send story tips to leigh@canadiancyclist.com and they just may be featured in an upcoming article.

Money for Trails
A message from IMBA Canada:

Dear IMBA Canada Affiliated Groups,

If you're looking for funding for your trails projects, there appear to be more opportunities for big money than ever before. In particular, the latest announcement of federal funding for trails marks a giant step forward for trails nationwide. Many IMBA Canada affiliated groups are eligible for funding through this one-time initiative, and it would be a pity if no mountain bike groups took advantage of this unprecedented pot of trails money. There isn't much time to waste: The application deadline is June 26th - so get writing! Let's make 2009 a historic year for trail projects - Read on to find out more about the Federal Funding and other grant opportunities . . .

Federal Infrastructure Funding

As part of the economic stimulus package the Federal Government has allocated $25 million in funds to go towards trails. The total available funds will be divided (roughly equally) among three categories of projects: 1) Snowmobile (winter motorized), 2) ATV/ORM (summer motorized), and 3) Non-motorized. Projects involving construction, upgrade, renovation or rehabilitation of multi-purpose trails, non-motorized trails, snowmobile trails and all-terrain vehicle / off-road motorcycle trails are eligible. This funding program applies only to the 2009-2010 fiscal year. As such, projects must be “shovel ready” and of a scope and size that can be completed within the fiscal year by the successful applicant. Your project must start after June 26, 2009 (the application deadline) and be completed by March 31, 2010. Larger projects may be partially eligible if there is a clear phase of the project that falls between these dates. These federal dollars must be matched by cash contributions from National Trails Coalition member organizations or their partners. For full and complete details, visit the National Trails Coalition Website.

More info for BC Residents on the BC IMBA Blog. More info for Ontarians on the Ontario IMBA Blog.

Ontario Healthy Communities Fund

Formerly the "Communities in Action Fund", the Healthy Communities Fund will support provincial and community organizations to plan and deliver integrated initiatives that address multiple risk factors and promote health and wellness, at all levels, across the province. There are 3 funding streams: "Local", "Planning" and "Provincial. Deadline for applications is July 24, 2009.

Shell Environmental Fund

The Shell Environmental Fund (SEF) provides financial support to grass roots, action-oriented projects that improve and protect the Canadian environment. Beginning in Fall 2009, SEF grant amounts will be increased from $5,000 to up to $10,000. Applications are accepted twice yearly for Spring and Fall and must be submitted prior to the deadline: February 15 and September 13. All applications must be submitted online at www.shell.ca/sef

MEC Access Grants

MEC Access Grants range from $500 to $15,000, and fund projects that inspire participation, protect or facilitate public access, and promote responsible use of the outdoors. The online application must be completed by the September 10th and March 10th deadlines.

BNL Trail Building Kit
We have put together a trail kit to assist with development and maintenance of our mountain bike trails. The intent would be to have it used by groups organizing trail days and really not for individual use. We request that you sign out all the equipment at once (entire kit) with exception of the chain saw as it is not always required. You must be 18 year of age to sign out the equipment and you must sign a waiver. Right now the equipment is in storage behind Freeride downtown as we do not have an area to store this equipment and we wanted something central. Call ahead to Freeride 722-7433 to ensure the kit is not in use and the guys at the shop can sign it out to you. Try and make arrangements during their business hours for pick up. We encourage you to use the equipment and appreciate your hard work. The kit has the following equipment:

2 Clearing Axes, 2 Steel Shovels, 1 - 10lb Sledge Hammer, 2 - 24” Metal rakes, 2 Maddox Pick Axe, 1 - 5 liter gas can, 3 Stihl Lopers, 2 C14 Bow Rakes, 1 Stihl MS 270 Chain Saw.

Reminder about the Shared Use Trails at White Hills
As most people who frequent the White Hills are aware, the East Coast Trail Association has completed a new trail from the bottom of the road at Quidi Vidi to the top of the hill above the Gut. This work was done following an agreement with a number of people representing mountain bikers who also actively use the hill. It was agreed that there would be two separate routes from the hilltop to the bottom on the coastal side. Mountain bikers will continue to use the former ECTA trail, while the new trail will be for hikers only. There are small warning signs at all points where the two trails intersect, plus signs at both ends with a map and explanation of the rules that now apply to this area.

There are now also brochures with a map and explanation of the agreed rules for the area available in all of the bike and outdoor shops. Everyone who uses the White Hills trails is encouraged to pick up a brochure.

Note that this agreement does not apply to the downhill mountain bike trails on the hill between the Fisheries and Oceans Centre and Quidi Vidi.

This agreement was created to minimize conflict and to maximize safety in an area that will probably see a lot more hikers than it has in the past. Everyone should respect the agreement, which means that mountain bikers should stay off the designated hiking trail and that hikers should stay off the designated mountain bike trail.

Thank you for your cooperation.
